CANTERBURY PROVINCE PA CHRISTCHURCH, Mar. 27. A high south-west wind and a low air temperature, accompanied by showers of rain, hail, and sleet, brought a touch of winter unseasonably early to Canterbury to-day. The wind averaged 30 miles an hour, with gusts .of over 70. The temperature at noon was only 42 degrees. Yesterday was mild, with north-west and westerly winds, but late in the afternoon the wind backed to the south-west and rain set in during the night. The wind increased in force this morning and there were frequent showers of sleet and hail, some of which left the ground white for up to 20 minutes. There was also a short thunderstorm. Snow is low on the Canterbury foothills. The weather appeared to have cleared late this afternoon.
