CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP GOES TO GRANGE CLUB

Grange are the 1948-49 winners of the Otago Cricket Association’s senior competition. The final series of matches, which was completed on Saturday', had to be restricted to one day as no play was possible on the previous Saturday because of the unfavourable weather. Grange, which had already placed itself in an unassailable position, further increased its margin by securing a five-point win against Dunedin. Grange suffered only one reverse during the season, losing outright to University after leading on the first innings. Dunedin accomplished an excellent performance as it advanced from the bottom of the table last season to finish in second place. High School Old Boys, last year’s champions, gained a first innings win against Albion-YMCA, University won comfortably against North-East Valley, and Carisbrook and Kaikorai drew.

The matches were played on softish wickets and play was interrupted by rain. The highest scorer of the day was L. Cornish, the young University player, who made a valuable contribution of 76, not out. Other commendable scores were those of W. S. Haig (Grange) 61, L. J. Groves (Old Boys) 59. and R. Harwood (Carisbrook) 53. Several bowlers achieved success, particularly F. Stanley, of Kaikorai. who obtained eight Carisbrook wickets for 55 runs, J. H. Heslop (University) five for 29, T. A. Freeman (Grange) five for 42, E. Kruskopf (Dunedin) four for 53, Groves (Old Boys) four for 54, P. Sawers (Albion-YMCA) five for 73, and M. Muir (Dunedin) five for 78.

without the Walsh brothers, but on the other hand both Cornish and Geary batted attractively for 76 not out and 34 not out respectively. The fielding of R. Hannam for North-East Valley was outstanding. Scores: — North-East Valley First Innings B. Barnes, c Cornish, b Heslop .. .. 22 H. Hannam, c Davie, b Heslop .. .. 10 R. B'. iir, run out 13 H.
