OLYMPIC POOL
SATISFACTORY DISCUSSIONS COUNCIL AND SWIMMING OFFICIALS “ The General Committee and the City Council as a whole are anxious to see swimming flourishing in the city and the province, and to see an Olympic pool in the city an established fact,” said Cr E. J. Smith, chairman of the General Committee of the council, when opening the University championship carnival at the Municipal Baths last night. The matter had been discussed on many occasions by the committee, Cr Smith said, and numerous reports had been presented by the corporation’s experts. Both the city engineer, Mr S. G. Scoular, and the superintendent of reserves, Mr M. R. Skipworth, had taken the opportunity when overseas of collecting very valuable data, which would be most' useful to the council.
Cr Smith said that the officials of the Otago Swimming Centre had been taken into the council’s confidence, and discussions had begun on the question of sites, foundations and open-air pools as opposed to closed-in pools. Costs and finance had also been discussed. The speaker added that he was sure the centre officials came away from the conference satisfied that the council was doing all it could to obtain its and their hearts’ desire. Further discussions would be held, Cr Smith concluded, and he believed that when the New Zealand championships were next held in Dunedin, they would be held in a modern and up-to-date swimming pool that would be one of the amenities of the city.
