Monthly Meeting of Council
Mr J. S. Adams was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the Waitaki County Council yesterday, and there were also present Crs W. Muldrew, W. J. Gillies, W. M. Cooper, M. Francis, D. H. Borrie, D. 11. Scott and A, H. McKinnon.
The Hampden RSA wrote requesting financial assistance towards the upkeep of the war memorial at Hampden.—The chairman. Cr Gillies, and the engineer, were authorised to confer with the RSA at Hampden with a view to giving every possible assistance. The Otago Education Board wrote that it desired to acquire a portion of railway land and private property adjoining ilie school grounds at Duntroon, and asking whether the council would consent to the closing of the adjoining road reserve.— It was decided to agree to the request provided no objections were raised Dy the Railways Department, and the department gave an assurance that a new railway bridge would be built lower down from the present bridge. The Ministry of works advised that the proposals for reforming and metalling a further portion of the Seven Mile road had been approved from an engineering viewpoint, and application had been made for the transfer of £450 on a £1 for £1 basis.—The engineer was authorised to call tenders for the work as soon as the authority came to hand.
The North Otago Progress League Irrigation Farm, Ltd., wrote that the action of the council in refusing to accept £I6OO in full settlement, of the Public Works Department’s liability in connection with the deleterious effect on the water-race intake of ihe operations of the Waitaki HydroElectric station, met with the approval of the directors. The directors offered to assist the council in making representations to the department.—The county clerk, Mr G. R. Joll, was instructed to write thanking the directors for their support.. The Moeraki Women’s Institute wrote complaining about the state of the road surfaces around Moeraki.—The engineer reported that proposals for tar-sealing at Moeraki had been aoproved. The council agreed to call for tenders for the work when monetary authority came to hand, and to grade the highway and roads without delay. Accounts totalled £7054 10? 6d. One public hall licence was issued, and 16 building permits totalling £11,009. The engineer, Mr B. H. Horner, reported that the contractor had made a start on the Seven Mile road, and timber and piles were on the site for repairs to the Otekaikc bidge.
