SHIP STRIKES MINE

INCIDENT OFF CANTON FORTY PEOPLE KILLED Rec. 10.40 p.m. HONGKONG, Mar. 25. Forty persons were killed and an unknown number injured when the British-registered Hongkong-Canton luxury steamer, the Miss Orient, struck a mine when six miles from Canton last night. One report stated that the ship was carrying 500 passengers. A Chinese ship, which followed the Miss Orient, is reported to have picked up 22 survivors. The casualties are believed to be mainly Chinese. The mine is believed to have been laid by bandits. The ship belongs to one of more than a dozen Chinese and British companies which have received demands for “ protection money ” in recent months. Aviation companies and banks in Canton have also been threatened.
