Captain Scott Leaving from New Zealand

In the film “Scott of the Antarctic,” which will shortly be seen in Dunedin, the expedition leaves Lyttelton for its Antarctic base. Many residents of Dunedin will no doubt recall that this was not the case, and that this famous band of explorers left not from Lyttelton but Port Chalmers. How this mistake was made in the production of the film is not known, but it does not affect the production in any major way. The photograph on the left is a reproduction from the film and shows Captain Scott, played by John Mills, bidding farewell to his wife, Kathleen, played by Diana Churchill, on board the Terra Nova prior to the ship’s sailing. Below is a picture taken from the Otago Witness dated December 7, 1910, showing the Terra Nova at the Port Chalmers wharf, with a section of the large crowd which gathered there to wish God-speed to the gallant band on their hazardous journey.
