CARPENTERS’ UNION TO DISCUSS DISPUTE WITH FEDERATION OF LABOUR

PA WELLINGTON. Mar. 11. A meeting between the National Council of the Carpenters’ Union and the National Executive of the Federation of Labour will be held on Monday morning to consider the present dispute. This was announced to-night by Mr K. Baxter, secretary of the New Zealand Federation of Labour, in the following statement: “My executive, at a special meeting to-day, gave further consideration to the carpenters’ dispute. The executive is gravely concerned at the trend which the dispute is taking;'.particularly the actions of a committee styling itself the ‘Action Committee,’ which is usurping the powers of the Auckland Trades Council, the national council, and the National Executive of the Federation of Labour.

“My executive considers'it is Under an obligation to the affiliations of the Federation of Labour to repudiate the conduct of the ‘Action Committee,’ ivhich seemingly is chiefly concerned in involving other organisations, with the apparent object of bringing about a complete stoppage of industry without the slightest consideration to the effects of such action on the rank and file of trade unionists and their families,” added Mr Baxter. “We have already requested the carpenters’ organisation to hand the dispute over to the Federation of Labour. This has not been done to date, but we are now advised by the national secretary of the Carpenters’ Union that his National Council is prepared to meet the National Executive of the Federation of Labour on Monday morning. My National Executive has agreed to meet the National Council of the Carpenters’ Union, and this meeting will take place at the Trades Hall, Wellington, at 10 o’clock on Monday morning.”
