SUBSTANTIAL DROP
EXPORT MEAT KILLINGS AVERAGE WEIGHTS EXCELLENT Export moat killings for the period October 1, 1948, to February 26, 1949, still show a substantial drop of 8807 tons compared with the corresponding period for last season, states the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. The killing season promises to be long drawn out, especially in the North Island, but it is expected that from now on the deficiency in tonnage will be gradually made up. The individual island killings of sheep and lambs are interesting, as they to a great extent reflect the seasonal conditions in the respective areas. In the North Island the kill is 393,725 carcasses less than for the same period last year, resulting in a deficiency of 3509 tons of exportable meat. The South Island position is just the reverse. Increased killings there total 252,243 carcasses, equal to an additional 4989 tons of exportable meat. Average weights to date are excellent, those for lambs being just over ljlb per carcase in excess of the previous seasonBeef killings to date are negligible.
