NEW APPOINTMENTS

STIPENDIARY MAGISTRATES AUCKLAND AND WANGANUI PA WELLINGTON, Mar. 8. The appointment of Mr F. McCarthy, of Auckland, and Mr S. S. Preston of Te Awamutu, as stipendiary magistrates was announced this evening by the Minister of Justice, Mr Mason. The appointments are necessitated by the retirement m the near future of Mr F. H. Levien, S.M., of Auckland, and Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M of Wanganui. It is understood that Mr McCarthy will take up duty at Auckland on March 31. Mr . Preston will be stationed at Wanganui but he will not take up his appointment until June I. Mr McCarthy, LL.M., is a member of the legal firm of Wilson, Henry and McCarthy, of Auckland. He was for many years associated with Mr V. R. Meredith, Crown solicitor at Auckland. He has had extensive experience in the Supreme Court as well as wide general legal experience. Mr McCarthy has been law lecturer at Auckland University for many years. He served overseas with the Royal Air Force for four years and a-half,rising to the rank of wing commander. He was deputy provost marshal in the Ceylon Mr Preston, a membei of the firm of McCarter, Preston and Edmonds, of Te Awamutu, has had a wide and varied experience as a barrister and solicitor. He is keenly interested in various forms of sport and has also taken a keen interest in local body affairs.
