KAITANGATA BOROUGH

Sir, —Is it possible that at last Kaitangata ratepayers are becoming public-minded? Surely when one sees four or five letters on borough affairs within a few days from such a usually apathetic public one may be forgiven for thinking so. It is high time, indeed, that a few more ratepayers besides the much-berated and abused members of the Borough Council took an interest in public affairs. These councillors who,. I believe, do their best —although it does seem a poor best at times —get more kicks than halfpence for their trouble. Whether it is hiring a truck to lift refuse or buying a mower suitable or otherwise to clean the footpaths or roadsides, it is all a question of finance and the spending of the ratepayers’ money. In these matters our progressive Mayor has no doubt the largest voice. Our two new councillors have not had a chance 'to prove themselves yet, although it is a month since they were elected. Things seem to be at a standstill when our Mayor goes off to conferences. Has his Deputy Mayor not the ability to carry on? If not, why have one? I do not find the overgrown roadsides so objectionable as I do the park, which used to be such a beautiful spot for children to play in, and is now a wilderness. Also the baths, which are usually in a filthy condition, although water is plentiful and costs nothing. While on the subject of water, let me remind “ Progress ” that it was not under the present Mayor and council that part of the town at least was allowed to have a decent emergency water supply. It is a great pity that our present council is not as progressive as the last one,' otherwise I believe our water scheme would be further advanced. However, let us not complain about this council, but look forward to next council election and put in a new team that will make Kaitangata a brighter and better place to live in.—l am, etc.. An Onlooker.
