HUTT VALLEY WINS

K. C. JAMES BATS WELL PA WELLINGTON, Feb. 28. A valuable innings for 97 by the veteran New Zealand representative, K. C. James, was largely responsible for Hutt Valley gaining an outright win by 80 runs against Taranaki and retaining the Hawke Cup. Taranaki were left with three hours and a-quarter in which to get 309 runs to win. With everything to gain the batsmen forced the pace and a dashing second wicket partnership between Betts and Meuli which added 126 runs in 73 minutes, looked like snatching the game out of the fire for Taranaki, but after their dismissal the rest of the side was unable to carry on the fast scoring rate. Scores:—Hutt Valley 293 and 263 (K. C. James 97, Kemp 40- Autridge four for 49); Taranaki 248 and 228 (Betts 68. Meuli 59; Drylie five for 50).
