TONGAN STUDENT

FIRST IN DUNEDIN MEDICAL COURSE PLANS The first Tongan student to attend the University of Otago has arrived in Dunedin. He is 25-year-old Sione Tapa, who has be?n enrolled at the Otago Medical School. Mr Tapa passed with distinction in a four-year course at the Central Medical School, Suva, and subsequently returned to his home and practised medicine among his fellow-islanders for six months. The Tongan Government then decided that he should be given the opportunity of obtaining full medical status, and sent him and another student named ’Alo to New Zealand. Mr Tapa spent last year at Auckland University College, where his associate will spend another year before coming to Dunedin. As a sideline to his medical work Mr Tapa is keenly interested in swimming and tennis.
