KEEN INTEREST SHOWN IN LIGHT EWES PA CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 2. The store sheep entry at Addington today was 14,670. Lambs were excellent, with several lines of useful hill-country drafts in forward order. The demand was good throughout the sale. Best lambs were fully firm on last week’s rates, but medium lambs were about Is lower. Best lambs made 30s 6d to 34s 7d; good, 26s to 30s; medium, 21s to 255; and small and backward down to 15s 6d. There was an unusually large proportion of good quality lines among the ewe entry. The best of 4he old ewes sold well, and made up to 32s for two good lines. Good made from 24s to 28s, and ordinary from 18s to 235, with culls down to 15s. Wethers forward were of average quality, and sold at last week’s rates, with the best up to 37s 6d. The fat lamb entry was 1795, with prices on a par with those of last week. Few light lambs were penned, and export buyers had to compete with butchers for heavier sorts, the sale throughout being very firm. Values: Extra prime fat lambs made to 49s 7d; prime, 39s 6d to 43s 6d; good, 37s 6d to 38s 6d; medium, 32s 6d to 36s 6d; light, down to 28s 6d. The fat lamb entry was about 4000, and the general quality was good. Export buyers showed keen interest in lighter ewes, which firmed by fully 2s a head compared with last week’s rates. Wethers were firm at recent rates. The main factor in the strong demand for ewes was that supplies of lambs to freezing works have fallen off temporarily and freezing works buyers were competing more freely than last week. Values: Extra prime heavy wethers made to 57s 7d; prime heavy, 50s to 545; prime me-dium-weight, 44s to 495; ordinary, 40s to 435; plain and unfinished, 34s to 395. Prime heavy ewes made to 39s 7d; prime, 30s to 345; medium, 25s 6d to 295; plain and unfinished, 21s to 255. The fat cattle entry was 451. Heifer prices were firm and those for bullocks increased by about 15s a head. There was a preponderance' of old and plain sorts, and prices eased by about 10s a head. Best beef made to 67s 6d per 1001 b; good, 55s to 60s; medium, 50s to 52s 6d. Best cow beef made 42s 6d to 47s 6d; secondary cow beef, 37s 6d to 40s. Values: Extra prime heavy steers made to £3O 7s 6d; prime heavy, £24 10s to £27 10s: prime medium-weight, £2O 10s to £23 10s; ordinary and light. £l6 10s to £l9 10s. Extra prime heifers made to £23 2s 6d; prime, £ls to £18; ordinary and light heifers. £lO to £l4 10s. Extra prime cows made to £l7 Ts 6d; prime cows, £9 10s to £l2 10s; ordinary and light, £6 to £9. The yarding in the pork section was the smallest this year and the sale was good throughout although in the last two races values eased 3s to 4s a head. Choppers were forward in fairly heavy numbers and values dropped 10s a head. There was a good sale in that bacon section with rates firming 3s to 5s a head. Values: Light porkers made £4 9s 6d to £4 19s 6d; medium, £5 2s 6d to £5 12s 6d; heavy. £5 14s 6d to £5 19s 6d. The average price per lb was Is to Is 2d.
