RANGE OF PRICES

Tire following quotations per 1001 b for beef and per lb for mutton and pigs, are supplied, with a comparison with last week's prices, by our special representative at yesterday’s Burnside stock sale:—

operating carefully, while the trade were also following the sale carefully. Full schedule rates were maintained and in a number of cases appeared to be exceeded. Store cattle, of which there was a fairly big yarding, suffered to the greatest extent. Owing to the dry weather and feed going back buyers were operating cautiously,. only special pens coming under their notice. Any class of store cattle not showing breeding and in fair order met with a poor demand. In this case there were a number of pens passed. Baconers and porkers, of which there was an average yarding, showed very little variation from late sales. Fat Cattle The offering of fat cattle numbered 230 head. The heavier class bullock was somewhat slow of inquiry; but all classes, on the average, were a shade lowef than last week. There was a fair proportion of cows and heifers, and these also sold probably a shade easier than at the previous sale.' The top prices for the sale were secured by a consignment from Keith Hall, Mosgiel. These were offered on account of Mr A. S. Murray, prices being up to £2B 17s 6d. ■ Quotations; Prime heavy bullocks, to £2B 17s 6d; prime, £23 12s 6d to £25 2s 6d: medium, £2O 17s 6d to £22 7s 6d; light from £l7 17s 6d; prime heavy heifers, to £2O 12s 6d; prime, £l4 7s 6d to £l7 7s 6d; medium, £l2 17s 6d, to £l3 12s 6d; light, from £lO 7s 6d. Prime cows, £l2 17s 6d to £ls 2s 6d; medium. £lO 7s 6d to £l2 2s 6d; light, from £7 2s 6d. ' Fat Sheep The offering of fat sheep numbered 1500 compared with 2300 a week ago. Butchers were operating cautiously and picking the pens most suitable for their trade. It was quite evident that several were holding stock on hand from last week’s sale. Bidding was fairly smart, although prices were well below those of last week. The greatest depreciation was in the sale of ewes. Quotations: Prime heavy wethers, to sos 6d; prime, 50s to 535; medium, 45s to 47s 6d; light, from 38s; prime young ewes. 33s to 355; prime, 26s to 28s 6d; medium. 24s to 25s Gd; light, from 21s. Fat Lambs There was a fairly good display of fat lambs, with the usual number of light and mixed sorts. Exporters were giving their attention to tire sale throughout, while the trade were also attending to their business. Quotations: Prime quality lambs, 42s to 465; medium. 36s to 395; light, from 30s. Store Cattle The offering of store cattle was a fairly large one and lacked the interest which has been taken in this sale for some weeks. Dry weather in the north has had the effect of forcing a number of cattle on to the market, and buyers are choosing the classes best suitable for their requirements. For good, well-grown steers, values are easier by fully £2 a head, and for other classes there was a further depreciation. One pen of well-grown four to five-year-old steers made £l7 10s; this pen a few weeks back would have realised £2O. Good coloured three-year-old steers made up to £l6, while poorer classes were selling at reduced figures. The offering of runners and vealers was a moderate one and the prices for these showed little difference from late sales. Good runners are realising from £lO 10s to £l2 10s; best vealers, £5 14s to £6 7s; medium, £3 18s to £4 ss. Fat Pigs There appeared to be no quotable alteration in the value of both baconers and porkers. Prime baconers made from £7 12s to £8; medium, £6 16s to £7 6s; light, from £6 ss. Best porkers, £5 5s to £6 2s.
