ATLANTIC STOWAWAYS
APPEARANCE BEFORE COURT PA WELLINGTON, Jan. 16. Three stowaways in the immigrant ship Atlantis were dealt with in the Magistrate’s Court to-day before Mr A. M. Goulding, S.M. Clement Murphy pleaded guilty to secreting himself on board at London on November 30. Accused told the court he was born in Wanganui and had been trying to get to New Zealand for some time. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon, a condition being that he repay half the fare, £6O, by monthly instalments of £lO. The remaining pair were British seamen, Duncan Thomson, and Sydney Cooper. They were charged with secreting themselves on board at Fremantle on January 4. They said they had been drinking with the immigrants and crew and had gone to sleep and woke up when the ship was at spa. The two men were convicted and fined £5 and ordered to pay half the cost of the fare.
