MINER KILLED BY FALL

WELL-KNOWN BOXER Special to the Daily Times .... CROMWELL, Jan. 16. Arthur Sutherland,- aged about 33, of Ripponvale, Cromwell, was buried by a fall of earth while putting in a drive for gold mining at Upper Nevis about 10 o’clock yesterday morning. So far as could be ascertained from early reports. Sutherland was working in the tunnel with a. companion, Edward Mallett. when it collapsed, but the latter managed to extricate himself. Constable Rusbatch. of Cromwell, upon receiving news of the tragedy, went to the Nevis and recovered the body of Sutherland. Sutherland, who had been in the Cromwell, district for some years, was a builder by trade. A married man, he leaves a wife, and two young children. Sutherland was a noted amateur boxer and won the New Zealand middle-weight title in 1937. He represented New Zealand at the British Empire Games in Sydney in 1938. A hardhitting boxer, he enjoyed much success in the ring in Otago and Southland, and won titles in the two provinces in the same year on more than one occasion. * After his return from the Empire Games he did good work as an instructor in the country districts. He was a brother of A. G. Sutherland, the Southland Rugby captain for several years and South Island wing three-quarter.
