MENUHIN REFUSES
APPEARANCES WITH CHICAGO ORCHESTRA FURTWANGLER CONTROVERSY ROME, Jan. 13. The violinist Yehudi Menuhin says he will not appear with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra until it fulfils its promise to engage the German conductor, Wilhelm Furtwangler. Mr Menuhin sent a telegram to the orchestra’s Board of Directors protesting against the “ teapot tempest ” over Furtwangler. Several leading artists have refused to appear with the orchestra if Furtwangler is allowed to conduct. Their opposition is voiced on the grounds that Furtwangler conducted concerts in Germany during the Nazi regime.
