LABOUR PARTY POLICY
BRITAIN’S GENERAL ELECTION FURTHER NATIONALISATION MENTIONED NZPA Special Correspondent Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 14. The industrial correspondent of .the News Chronicle claims that the first draft of the Labour Party’s policy programme, which will form tne basis of the Government’s election campaign, will propose an attack upon high prices by extending Government control of means of distribution and that it will make an effort to win the support of the middle classes by promising them improved conditions when the austerity years are over. The party chairman, Mr Herbert Morrison, who has been largely responsible for drafting the statement, is reported to be against advocating nationalisation for nationalisation’s sake and wants a period of consolidation rather than further adventures in the field of State control. Nevertheless, a number of industries, among them shipbuilding, insurance, aircraft, shipping and chemical manufacturing, are all being examined with the object of submitting them to nationalisation.
