EXCITING HOUR
DESTINATIONS ALLOTTED IMMIGRANTS FROM BRITAIN Special Correspondent WELLINGTON, Jan. 14. “ Dunedin —what sort of place? ” Eighty-three British immigrants, many of them young Scottish people who arrived in the Government-chartered vessel Atlantis this morning, learned for the first time that their destination was Dunedin. Many of them had little idea what kind of city it was, and approached Wellington people with innumerable inquiries. It is not possible to inform immigrants of their various destinations until the ship reaches New Zealand. On immigrant ships there is always an hour of excitement when the young people learn where their future homes are to be. Some of those going to the South Island were frankly disappointed. It was clear that they had heard far more about northern centres, and they were troubled lest the south be cold and distant from centres of population. South Islanders who talked to them hastened to disillusion them. Eighty-three Government - assisted immigrants will go to Dunedin, and 17 to Invercargill. There will be three for Oamaru. The newcomers were shown films of New Zealand on board the ship and heard lectures about the country. Information was available to them from the Government information officer travelling with them.
