MORE CRIMINAL CASES

FIGURES FOR 1948 SHOW SMALL INCREASE More cases were heard in the criminal courts in Dunedin during 1948 than in the previous year, although there was a slight decrease in the number of charges dealt with in the Children's Court. The number of plaints entered in the Magistrate's Court in 1948 was also greater than in 1947. The court statistics for last year show that there were 287 sittings of the criminal court to deal with 2487 cases, compared with 289 sittings for 2338 cases in 1947. Children’s Court cases dropped from 270 in 1947 to 231 last year. Withdrawals, applications for the striking out of cases and settlements by consent caused the 1363 plaints in the Magistrate's Court last year to be reduced to 101 actually defended. In 1947, 1188 plaints were entered and 92 defended.
