MILK WORKERS

AWARD PROVISIONS AGREEMENT ON MAJOR ISSUES PA WELLINGTON, Jan. 14. A basic wage of £6 17s 6d for milk pasteurising and bottling factory emloyees was agreed on when claims for a new award were discussed before Mr H. M. Hopper, conciliation commissioner, to-day. Agreement was reached on the most important clauses, the period of the annual holidays being one question which will go to the Arbitration Court for determination. Under the agreement reached to-day, tippers and despatch men in charge were granted 5s above the basic rate. Additional provision was also made for engine drivers holding a stationary driver’s certificate. Payment of 2s 3d meal money for all workers other than shift workers employed after 6 p.m. was agreed on. Overtime payment will be as in the present award. It was agreed to add January 2 to the holidays under the award. The date on which the new wage provisions come into force will be decided by the court, but they will expire on June 30, 1950. The award will cover the whole of New Zealand, subject to tl>e reservation by the employers’ representatives that agreement on this point should not prejudice any application by the Wellington City Council.
