Post-section Play In Pairs Championship Marred by Showers

PA ' AUCKLAND, Jan. 14. Four rounds of post-section play in the New Zealand Bowling Association’s Championships were decided on heavy greens to-day, and in rain that varied from a drizzle to heavy showers. Two-lifers met on the Carlton Green, and one-lifers on 11 other suburban greens. The titleholders, Garelja and Marinovich (Oratia), were eliminated, losing their remaining life in the first round'to-day to Livingstone and Wills (Walton) by the good margin of 15 —20. The Fours and Pairs champion of 1936, Haworth (Christchurch) was eliminated in the third round to-day by North (Papatoetoe) by the decisive margin of 11—24. Twolifers remaining at the end of the play are Smith (Christchurch), Jones and Kensington (Whangarei), Ganderton (Balmoral). Spearman (Sydenham), the Singles title-holder of 1937 and 1941 and skip of the winning four in 1944 lost a life to N. Donaldson (Ponsonby) in the first round to-day but won the remaining games convincingly. Mingins (Onehunga), the champion Fours skip in the last tournament, with Livingstone (Onehunga) the former Singles champion, as lead, showed great fighting power and a remarkably thoughtful approach to the game in winning twice to-day from adverse positions. They lost the first life this morning to Singleton (Pukekohe).
