TIMBER LEASE CASE
MR WARD’S REQUEST FOR INQUIRY GRANTED
LEAVE FROM CABINET POST Rec. 0.15 a.m. CANBERRA, Dec- 23. The Prime Minister, Mr J. B. Chifley, announced, following the conclusion of what has been known as the New Guinea timber case, that the Minister of Transport and External Territories, Mr E. J. Ward, had requested the appointment of a Royal Commission into an alleged grant of certain timber licences in New Guinea. After consultation with his colleagues, Mr Chifley said he had decided that a Royal Commission should be appointed. Mr Chifley said Mr Ward had made a similar request a year ago at the very outset of the case, and had pressed it since. Mr Ward had also requested that if it were decided to appoint a Royal Commission he should be relieved of his administrative duties until the commission made its report. The Prime Minister added that he had acceded to this request, and had -.asked the Minister for the Army, Mr C. Chambers, to act as Minister iot Transport and External Territories.
