WAR IN CHINA
LULL ON ALL FRONTS
PEACE EFFORTS REPORTED NZPA—Reuter—Copyright NANKING, Dec. 22. Persistent unconfirmed Chinese reports repeat that Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek has given the “ green light ” to the Premier, Dr Sun Fo, to approach the Communists for an “ honourable peace.” As a lull continues on the North and Central China fronts, Shanghai’s hopes for an early peace and being spared the ravages of civil war have risen. Some quarters believe the lull in Central China is a result of the Communist desire to see what sort of terms Dr Sun Fo is willing to offer. The Nationalists in minor engagements in some suburbs of Peiping have pushed the Communists back a few miles. In Central China, deployment for the impending battle for Nanking continues. A new sector has been added to the Nationalist defence line in the vicinity of Pengpu, and the line as now reported extends 100 miles. The British cruiser London, carrying Rear-admiral A. C. G. Madden, commanding the Fifth Cruiser Squadron, Far Eastern Station, to-day anchored in “ battleship row," opposite the Shanghai Bund. A late message from Nanking says that tremendous fires are raging only four miles north of Tientsin.
