MARSHALL AID HALTED
GRANTS TO NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES NZPA—Copyright Rec. 8 p.m. WASHINGTON, Dec. 22. The United States to-day halted all Marshall Plan . aid to t the Netherlands East Indies, pending settlement of hostilities between the Dutch and the Indonesian Republic. This action was disclosed in a cablegram sent by Mr Paul Hoffman, ECA administrator,* to the chief of the ECA mission in the Netherlands. A leading ECA official said the move came after “full consultation with the State Department.” The text of the cablegram was not immediately made public, but it is known that the action cuts off for the present any ECA aid grants to the Netherlands East Indies. The Indies so far have been allocated 61,790,958 dollars’ worth of aid. The Netherlands Government may continue to obtain Marshall Plan goods the Netherlands East Indies by paying for them in dollars, said an authoritative source to-day. They pointed out that contracts had already been signed through bo 4 th private and Government channels for quantities of goods awaiting shipment to Indonesia. It wotild not be permissible to pay for these goods with Marshall Plan funds, but it may be possible for the Dutch Government to use their own reserves of dollars to pay for the goods in the usual way.
