CHRISTMAS WEDDINGS ALWAYS POPULAR
Clergymen, florists, photographers and taxi drivers, the people most closely connected with weddings other than the bride and bridegroom, their families and friends, have all had a busy time this week when couples have once again demonstrated the popularity of Christmas marriages. One wedding photographer described his work this week as terrific and said he was sure that the cameras had never before been so busy at Christmas time in photographing happy couples. Not during the war or the immediate years after had his studio been so busy, and a hectic week had reached its peak on Wednesday night. An unusual number of school jubilees in Otago and Southland coming at this time of the year had caused some photographers to cancel wedding engagements, he said. These functions would be continuing until February.
A florist who declared that she had had a “ pretty hectic ” week, remarked that there was a trend away from weddings being celebrated on actual holidays, such as Boxing Day, and it was now more common for them to be held in the week or fortnight prior to the holidays. The past fortnight had been very busy. The Dunedin Registry Office reported a busy period. Three office marriages were held yesterday and five were booked for to-day. Last year two were held on Christmas Eve. Last December 115 licences were issued, while already this month the number was 113.
