AUCKLAND CUP CANDIDATES IN SMART GALLOPS
Special to the Dally Times AUCKLAND, Dec. 22. The Auckland Cup horses. Lord Revel, Bruce, and King’s Ransom, all pleased their admirers by the manner in which they galloped over a mile and a-quarter on the outside of the course proper at Ellerslie to-day. Howe and Coral Arc also performed satisfactorily in the gallop and the other participant. Welcome Guest, was eased, to finish well behind. Citril was responsible for the best sprint when she shaded Super Vaals with Flowerburn going comfortably several lengths back in the fastest five furlongs. The poles were out 60 feet and the going was good, although not really fast. The ground just breaking on the surface. Lord Revel was just in front of Bruce, King’s Ransom. Royal Tan, and Coral Arc. who were well clear of Howe and Welcome Guest after running a mile and a-quarter in 2min 23sec, the last six furlongs in lmin 21 2-ssec, and the half-mile in 52sec. Lord Revel and Welcome Guest began in front with Royal Tan and Coral Arc some lengths in the rear. Lord Revel led for four furlongs at a slow pace and then IJowe quickened the .speed by dashing to the front. Howe continued in front until the last furlong when he was allowed to ease and was passed by Lord Revel, Bruce, King’s Ransom, Royal Tan and Coral Arc, all of whom finished attractively. Lord Revel and Bruce are two of the fittest of the Cup horses. King’s Ransom showed that he has benefited by his recent racing and his was a very good effort because he had the most weight and the outside < running. Royal Tan finished well and Coral Arc both made up ground, finishing solidly. Welcome Guest was not required to exert himself and dropped behind in the closing stages. The Hob, a stablemate of Frances and The Grate, did pace work on the tan. He looks well. At his last start, The Hob finished second to Full Play in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton. On that form. The Hob is regarded as a distinct possibility for the Railway Handicap in which he is carrying 7.8 and is No. 8 at the barrier.
