SALMON SPEAR IN SOUND MILE TRIAL AT INVERCARGILL
Special to Daily Times INVERCARGILL. Dec. 23.
An excellent trial by the Dunedin Cup candidate, Salmon Spear, was the highlight of training operations at Invercargill yesterday morning. The course proper, with the poles 30ft out, was on the heavy side. Aganev ,and Arctotis also worked well over some ground, and the best sprint figures of the morning were credited to Defendant and Oscillate.
Shadamai put a lot more dash into his work than he has for some time in finishing with Haughty Dick at the end of six furlongs in lmin 23 3-ssec. the last half in sGsec. •Salmon Spear went away from near the mile and a-half post, and he was joined by Anzora approaching the seven. Salmon Spear ran right away from Anzora over the final furlong, and he came home full of running. His last mile was run in lmin 49 l-ssec, the last six in lmin 20 4-ssec, and the last half in 55 4-ssec. It was an impressive trial, and the Salmagundi gelding promises to be a serious contender in the Dunedin Cup. V Gunther shaded Benoecula in completing a mile in lmin 51 2-ssec, the last half in 55 3-ssec. Both horses are in first-class order. Sea Flower was restricted to a round of easy pace work. She has not done well of late, and she may not be raced at Wingatui. Alsvider, assisted by Tahuiti over the last half, ran a mile in lmin 54sec, the last four in 56 3-ssec. Sir Garnish’s Condition
Sir Garnish was given a couple of rounds of pace work, sprinting the last half of the second round in 55 2-ssec. He holds his condition remarkably well. Ensemble ran an easy five, the last half-mile in 56sec.
Signal Officer was let off with an easy mile, the last six in lmin 22sec, and the last four in 53sec. He will be ridden by C. T. Wilson in the Hazlett Gold Cup on the second day. From a barrier start, Coney Park and Olio ran five furlongs in lmin 7 4-ssec, the last half in 53 3-ssec, and they finished together. Arctotis beat Bragden by three lengths over a mile in lmin 51 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 56 3-ssec. Arctotis continues to work well, but Bragden has been troubled with his feet, and may not be raced at the Dunedin meeting. Glenlivet and Bulloch Lade were together in sprinting half a jnile in 55sec. Beaugard and Sal’s Pal took lmin Bsec for the last five of six furlongs, the last half in 55sec. Both put a lot of dash into their work. ... Waicoe was restricted to an easy half mile in 57 l-ssec. There is a doubt about him being produced at Wingatui. Aganev’s Dash Aganev finished eight lengths clear of Pageantry at the end of a mile in lmin 52 2-ssec, the last six in lmin 24sec, and the last half in 57sec. Wantwood, who is not engaged at Wingatui, and Wild Cry went away from near the mile and a-quarter post, and were restricted to an easy round, coming home the last four in SBsec. Wantwood may be raced over middle distances during the New Year meetings. Defendant and Oscillate shaded Pimento at the end of five furlongs in lmin 6 2-ssec, the last half in 53 3-ssec—the best .sprint task of the morning. Defendant worked nicely. Geisha Girl loafed on the job in running five furlongs in lmin lOsec, the last half in 56 3-ssec. She may not be raced at Dunedin, but a decision will be made at the week-end. The Turk was let off with pace work. He has not done well lately, and it is possible that he will not be produced until the second day at Wingatui. Riding engagements for the Dunedin meeting include: —B. J. Langford—Bonnie Lancer, Sir Garnish, Sal’s Pal, Night Rider, Olio, Alsvider: W. Hillis, Benbecula; J. M. Cappie—lncentive (second day), Guther, Sea Flower, Fluorescent Light; G. W. Wright—Pageantry, .Sterling Lad, Aganev; K. Hickey, Arctotis; A. G. Peake, Oscillate; W. F. Ellis, Salmon Spear, Anzora.
C. M. Cassidy, who had the plaster removed from the thumb he broke at the New Zealand Cup meeting during the week, has decided not to resume riding until the Wyndham meeting. He said to-day that he wished to get in a week of riding track work before he resumed.
