MURAL REJECTED
UNSUITABLE FOR LINER’S DECORATION
PA AUCKLAND, Dec. 23. A surrealist painting depicting a Maori man clasping an Australian aboriginal woman has been rejected by the Union Steam Ship Company as unsuitable for the Tasman liner Monowai. It is one of a series of mural sketches by the well-known Australian artist, Douglas Aanands. The company’s marine superintendent, Captain V. G. Webb, said in Wellington that the rejected mural was supposed to represent obliquely the ties of friendship between New Zealand and Australia. Captain Webb refused to release proofs of the original to the press. He said the only decorations for the Monowai were etchings of birds on the staircase leading from the main lounge. The Monowai is to resume her transTasman run from Sydney on January 28. following an extensive refit after war service.
