ISRAEL FAILS TO OBTAIN SUPPORT SECURITY COUNCIL VOTE LONDON, Dec. 17. Israel failed to gain the Security Council’s support for United Nations membership to-day. The vote was five in favour, five abstentions, and one against. Seven votes were needed to obtain approval in the 11-nation Council. _ , . Those who voted for Israel’s admission were the United States, Russia, the Ukraine, Argentina, and Colombia. Those who abstained were' Britain, China, France, Canada. and Belgium. Syria voted against the application. British and French proposals to postpone the voting were rejected. Israel's representative, Mr Aubrey Eban, said: “We will submit our application again when we feel life it.” Sir Alexander Cadogan (Britain) said he could not understand why the Soviet delegate should urge immediate membership for Israel a''ter vetoing the applications of 12 other countries.
