OTAGO’S DOUBLE SUCCESS
MATCHES AGAINST CANTERBURY
Appreciation of the performances of the senior and junior representative teams of the Otago Boys’ Cricket Association in scoring a double success against Canterbury teams during the week for the first time since the inception of the boys’ matches between the provinces was expressed by Mr R. H. Oxley, manager of the Otago teams, to the Daily Times yesterday. The senior team, boys under 16 years of age, played for the Bilcliff Cup and the junior team, boys under 14, played for the Rex Cup. Mr Oxley commented that the success of the Otago boys was undoubtedly due in no small measure to the very fine coaching they had received from Mr L: Stewart, who was also the selector. Senior Match In the match between the under 16 teams Otago won the toss and batted on a very wet wicket, scoring 105. B. Cleland (26), F. Cameron (16) and P. Groves (14) batted well against the spin bowling of N. Jarman, who, with a strong north-westerly wind to help him, had the batsmen in trouble all the time. Jarman had the impressive figures in the first innings of six for 38 off 21 overs, seven of which were maidens. Whyte also bowled well, taking two for 29 off 15 overs. Canterbury made a good start in its first innings, J. Perry, who opened, carrying his bat for 26, Turnbull (15) and N. Watson (12) batted well on a badlywearing wicket. F. Cameron (five* for 27 off 13 overs) and P. Groves (five for 22 off 13 overs) bowled very well for Otago. In its second innings Otago scored 111, F. Cameron (24), P. Duncan (18) and R. Briggs (12) batting well against the bowling of D. Anderson, who took six for 33 off 22 overs, 10 of which were maidens, and W. Houston, four for 15 off 13 overs.
Canterbury totalled 91 in its second innings, Watson (16), Rhodes (15) and Turnbull (11) batting well. Cameron, six for 29 off 23 overs, 11 of which were maidens, and P. Groves, three for 22 off 23 overs. 11 of which were maidens, bowled very well. Otago won by 52 runs. Junior Teams’ Match In the under 14 teams' match Canterbury won the toss and sent Otago in on a good wicket, Otago scoring 231. Brooks (64), Hislop (46), Mahon (31) and Porter (20) batted well. Bowling for Canterbury. Bolton, four for 42 off 23 overs, 10 of which were maidens, was the most successful.
After a very trying day in the field, Canterbury started its innings in the late afternoon and lost three wickets very quicklv, the side being disposed of for 113. Bolton (17), Gray (16), Bamford (15), Reeves (13), Wilkinson (13), and Purdon (11) were the highest scorers. Mahon (two for 10), Mclntyre three for 23), Brooks' (two for 21), and Dunbar (one for none) shared the wickets for Otago. Canterbury followed on and made 91, Purdon (46) and Currie (18) batting well. Mahon (four for 20) and Dunbar (three for 10) were the most successful bowlers. Otago won by an innings and 27 runs. . At the conclusion of the games the cups were presented to the Otago captains, who were congratulated on the very fine games.
