NEW AWARDS

OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND WORKERS GENERAL PAY INCREASES Several new awards relating to workers in various industries in the Otago and Southland industrial district have been announced by the Arbitration Court. Increases in pay are general and a number of clauses relating to overtime and working conditions are included. All workmen except assemblers coming under the terms of the new award for coachworkers and wheelwrights have been granted an increase of 2Jd per hour to 3s 94d an hour. Assemblers have been given an increase of ljd to 3s 6Jd an hour. A tool allowance of Id an hour is provided for those workmen who supply their own tools. . , Brick, tile, pottery and associated workers receive an increase of Id an hour, the hourly rate ranging from 3s 3d to 3s 8d in the various categories of workers. Increases for boys and youths range from 2s to 4s a week and for'females, from 2s to 3s a week. All adult female workers will receive an increase of 3s 3d a week. Hairdressers have been granted an increase of 6s lOd a week, making the minimum wage payable to male or female journeymen £7 4s a week. The new award includes a clause which directs that employers shall be responsible for the laundering of uniforms and payment for any distinctive uniforms. Female assistants are granted increases in pay ranging from Is to 4s 6d a week. No alterations have been made in the provisions for closing hours. „ , . ~ The principal alterations in the new award for preserved food, jam and starch factory employees provide for an increase in the minimum wage for working foremen to £7 a week, a rise of 6s lOd, and a 4s 6d increase for general hands to £6 10s a week. Youths receive an increase of from Is to 5s a week and female workers a rise of from 2s to 5s for junior workers and 3s 6d for adults.
