CARPENTERS AND JOINERS'

AWARD

An increase of 2Jd an hour, making the minimum wage 3s 9£d an hour, has been provided in the new award for carpenters and joiners in Otago and Southland. An additional 2s 6d per day, an increase of 3d, is to be paid to the worker “who is responsible for carrying out the work and who gives instructions to the other workers.’’ Tool allowance remains the same at 2d per hour. In the event of a holiday, other than Anzac Day, falling on a Saturday or a Sunday, such holiday is to be observed on the succeeding Monday, or if another holiday falls on the Monday, on the Tuesday. The clauses dealing with country work provide that when work is situated less than 50 miles from the worker’s place of residence he is to be paid his return fare to and from it once every three weeks. When the work is more than 50 miles the payment is to be made once every two months. An increase of |d an hour is provided for those working in fertiliser and chemical factories, and the employer is to provide gum boots for workers engaged in wet places and an additional payment of ljd per hour. If proper gum boots are not supplied, a payment of 4d an hour extra is to be made. A new clause provides that any worker required to work on roof trusses or fixing purlins on roof trusses which would allow for an unbroken fall of 15 feet or more shall be paid 4d an hour extra.
