FAMILY LUNCHEON AT PALACE NZPA—Reuter—Copyright

LONDON, Dec. 14. Messages of congratulation and good wishes from all parts of the Empire reached the King at Buckingham Palace to-day on his fifty-third birth-, day. Flags were flown on Government offices and public buildings, but there were no other official celebrations.-

The King spent the morning quietly at the Palace carrying out his usual routine of State business. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester joined the King at his birthday luncheon with the Queen, Princess Elizabeth, Princess Margaret and. the Duke of Edinburgh. The Duke of Gloucester later flew to Holland, where he is to stay as a guest of Prince Bernhard.
