TESTS OF RAILCARS INVESTIGATION COMMENCED Investigations w'ere commenced by the Railways Department yesterday to test the suitability of the railway line betwen Dunedin and Cromwell for railcars and a new type of heavy wagon, a six-wheeler capable of carrying a load of 40 tons. A special train left Dunedin yesterday morning for Cromwell. It consisted of a locomotive. a 56-foot carriage, the newtype wagon, a van, and the railcar which has been lying in the Dunedin yards for the past two weeks since its arrival from Christchurch. It has been stripped of its motors. The wagon, the largest to run in Otago, is 53ft 6in long. Known as the U.D. wagon, it was assembled at Hillside. The train is carrying departmental staff, and after covering the line to Middlemarch yesterday, will proceed to Ranfurly to-day, and to Cromwell to-morrow, returning to Dunedin on Tuesday. The tunnels and curves on the line will be tested for their suitability to take railcars of this type. The Minister of Railways. Mr Semple, acknowledging the need for a railcar service for Central Otago, has stated that it will be provided as soon as cars are available. x . The line will also be tested for its suitability to take the new freight wagons, several of w'hich are already in use in the North Island.
