CONTROL OF DANUBE

AUSTRIA DEMANDS VOICE N.Z.P.A.—Reuter—Copyright v VIENNA, Aug. 15. The Chancellor, Mr Leopold Figl, said, at a political rally at Klagenfurt, that Russian manipulation of the Danube conference at Belgrade threatened the prosperity of every Danubian nation, reports the Associated Press correspondent. The Eastern Bloc denied Austria voting membership at the conference, though the Danube" was an Austrian river. Mr Figl demanded that the Danube traffic be free and safeguarded by international guarantees. A Belgrade message says that at the Danube conference. Sir Charles Peake (Britain) said the Soviet draft would give Russia complete control of the Danube. “The draft allows as much discrimination as may at any time suit the end of Soviet acquisitiveness. Control of the Danube is in the hands of Soviet’s privileged mixed shipping companies. Britain seeks only the same freedom on the Danube as she gives ships in every United Kingdom port, to all flags without distinction.’’

Anna Paukner (Rumania) said the Soviet-Rumanian mixed companies were unique in the world and allowed a great Power to work with a smaller Power in circumstances of complete equality.”
