Improvers Among Younger Brigade At Riccarton

On the two days of the Grand National meeting so far decided some very promising gallopers among the younger brigade have been seen, and several of them should develop into very useful performers, Pierre, who has run two good races for a second in the third division of the Cashmere Plate and a win In the first division of the Aylesbury Handicap, is a smart three-year-old gelding by Royal Chief from Clarenceuse (Clarenceux—Bon Bord) and he is trained by W. Hawthorne at Trentham. A journey is not likely to trouble him. Resolute has been true, to name and he won the second division of the Aylesbury Handicap on Saturday, after having been second to St. Bruno in the first division of the Cashmere Plate on the first dav. A three-year-old gelding by Robin Goodfellow from Realize (Lackham—Moutoa Lady), Resolute is trained at Riccarton by R. McLennan and he was running on at the finish of each of his Peridot was third in the second division' of the Cashmere Plate and improved on this by finishing second to Resolute on Saturday. Trained at Riccarton by his owner, J. S. Shaw, Peridot was got by Christopher Robin from Sigma (Psychology—war Scare). A very likely improver also trained by J. S. Shaw is Eulogize, who finished fourth in the second division of the Aylesbury Handicap, the finish for the places being very close, A shapely sort by Finis from Praise (Limond—Eulogy), Eulogize appears to have a particularly bright future. The Dunedin-owned Ballochmyle got anything but a clear run in the second divis'on of the Aylesbury Handicap on Saturday, otherwise he might have finished closer up than he did. He races in the colours of Arabian Night and is by Balloch out of Cute Melody (Nigger Minstrel—Miss Cute). He has a nice turn of speed and his track career will no doubt be followed with interest by local followers of racing. In Courier the Riccarton trainer, F. A. Roberts, has a filly who looks certain to improve on her fourth placing in one of the divisions of the Cashmere Plate. She is by Finis and was got from Falcon, an English-bred mare by Flamingo from Lammermuir. Idle Jest followed up her win in a division of the Haldon Stakes at the Christchurch Hunt meeting with a second in a division of the Woolston Handicap on Saturday, and in her present form she should soon enter the list of winners. A filly by Foxbridge from Aboyne, byS> Paper Money, from The Linnet, she is owned and trained by J. S. Shaw, who looks like having a successful season with three-year-olds.

Jottings Nominations for the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting are due next Tuesday. Acceptances for the third day of the Grand National meeting are due to-day. Tendency to' Run Off Until Super is cured of his tendency to run out on the bends he is likely to drift in public favour. On each of the' two days at Riccarton he has attempted to run off the course but he pulled out brilliant speed once he was straightened up. Racing Solidly Wonder Boy has run two solid races at the Grand National meeting and his second to Distinction in the August Handican was a particularly good effort. The Ellerslie-tralned gelding finished very strongly and a race of more than a mile should not trouble him. Worth Remembering There was a paddock tip for Loch Lennox for the Woolston Handicap, but the Balloch mare was badly placed when the first division settled down. She made up a lot of leeway in the straight and in the circumstances she did well to get fourth. She is in fine condition and may be worth remembering for immediate engagements. Begins Slowly The Grate does not find her legs quickly in her races but she stays on well. At the Grand National meeting she has collected a third and a fourth by finishing strongly after being well back in the earlier stages, and a win is likely to come her way at any time. Good Place Dividend Arvastep, who paid a good price for a place in a division of the Woolston Handicap, is a four-year-old mare by Arvakur from Weatherstep, who was by Weathervane from Mazurka. Last season he was started nine times for a win and four placings. Boolamskee’s Form In the Grand National Hurdles Boolamskee added another second to his good record over hurdles and collected £SOO for his owner, Mr E. R. Curtis, who rode him. In some quarters it was argued that if Boolamskee had set out after Tremello sooner than he did >he might have won, but beyond question Tremello was the best horse on the day. Below Expectations Foxchase did not show the form expected of him in the Grand National Hurdles, but the going • was not to his liking, being firm and fast. The Foxbridge gelding was a long way back in the early stages and never looked like making up the leeway, although he was running past some tiring horses over the last bit to finish sixth. On a softer track Foxchase would probably have been a horse of another colour.
