COUNTY OUTCLASSED

FEW ANSWERS TO AUSTRALIAN BOWLING DURHAM’S SMALL TOTAL N .zi.r. A.— Uopyrtgiit LONDON. Aug. 11. Durham, the only minor county to be allotted a match with the Australians, was outclassed, but not disgraced in the first day of the game at Sunderland. The batsmen had few answers to the Australian bowling, though they emphatically gave some in the form of just punishment to loose balls. The county lost five wickets for 73 in 80 minutes of batting before stumps after having dismissed the Australians for 282 on a soft and at times awkward wicket.

The loss of three quick wickets in 40 minutes for 22 gave the Australians a shock, but a sturdy 64 by McCool and 55 by Miller tempered the edge of the county attack, and its slender resources could not withstand the aggressive batting of lan Johnson and Saggers at the end of the innings. Scores:—
