GOVERNMENT SUPPORT
ASSURANCE FROM MINISTER UNIQUE OCCASION FOR DOMINION P.A. WELLINGTON. Aug. 12. “Followers of sport in New Zealand will welcome the opportunity to act as hosts to the athletes of the Empire,” said the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Parry, commenting to-day on the decision to hold the Empire Games in New Zealand in 1950. Although he had not been informed officially of the decision, Mr Parry said he could give the assurance of wholehearted Government approval and support. “We are only a small country but. athletes from the Dominion have brought honour to the country in every branch of athletic sport,” continued the Minister. “ More than the successes they have gained, however, have we cherished the reputation for good sportsmanship which they have earned throughout the world. “Such'a congregation of the cream of the athletes of the Commonwealth countries could not but serve to strengthen those invisible ties which emphasise both the spirit and strength of the British fellowship of nations. We all recall the outstanding success of the last Empire Games held in Australia before the war,” said Mr Parry. “ I am convinced that every New Zealander will be determined that in the warmth of their welcome, sportsmanship on the field, and efficiency of organisation, the Games to be held here will be second to none.”
