NASEBY RATE DEMANDS
Sir,—Along with other ratepayers I received on July 26 from the Nasebv Borough Council a demand for rates 19481949 to be paid within 14 days, otherwise I am liable to be summoned for the recovery of same without further notice. It is, of course, obvious that these demands were prepared before that date. In the Otago Daily Times of July 31 appears an advertisement from the council showing estimates, etc., for the year and a statement that the council would hold a special meeting on August 12 .to make and levy the said rates. This’certainly requires some explaining, as it. appears that the council expects to have its demands met at least three days before the estimates have been confirmed The estimates as published are remarkable for their omissions. May I just mention insurance, an important item? —I am, etc., A. C. Williamson. [This letter was referred to the borough clerk, Mr C. Dixon, who replies: “The annual meeting at which the rates are struck usually takes place at the May meeting of the borough, but in April last' we were notified that the Government Valuation Department was about to make a new valuation and were delayed for some time. The department notified each ratepayer by a copy of the revised valuation, asking that any objection to same be forwarded to Mr W. Stewart, Valuer-general, and at the same time the borough advertised through the Daily Times that the valuation roll for the current* year was open for inspection at the town clerk’s office from May 10, 1948, to May 21, 1948, and that all objections must be lodged with the town clerk before May 21. As no objections were received the rate demands were sent out. It nas now been decided to send out fresh demands after the. 12th inst.”—Ed. 0.D.T.1
