SOUTHLAND BEATEN

AUSTRALIAN TOURING TEAM TWO GOALS TO NIL P.A. INVERCARGILL, Aug. 4. The Australian hockey team defeated Southland by 2 goals to nil to-day. It was not a brilliant exhibition, but the heavy state of the ground was partly responsible. The Australians did not field their best team but allowing for that, the opinion is held on to-day’s form that they are unlikely to beat New Zealand on a dry ground. The visitors were on attack nearly the whole of the first half but the Southland defence was good. The second half was more evenly contested. Goals were scored for Australia by Browne and Salisbury.
