CORPORAL PUNISHMENT NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN When the question of corporal punishment arising- from a report on crimes against women and children came up for discussion at the meeting of the National Council of Women yesterday evening, sharp differences of opinion were expressed. Several members said they considered that corporal punishment was fundamentally wrong and was not constructive. They recommended spiritual and psychological help. Others suggested that corporal punishment was more in the nature of a deterrent to others, if not to those convicted of such crimes.
The meeting decided that when this subject came up for discussion at the forthcoming National Council of Women conference in Auckland. Dunedin members should reaffirm the need for phychiatric treatment In the meantime it was suggested thal members should study Mrs Pottinger’p report from the justices of the peace conference oh that subject, and also the figures concerning ; reformative measures in New Zealand.
