DEATH OF MR R. GREEN The death occurred at Abbotsford op Tuesday morning of Mr Richard (“ Dick ”) Green, who was associated wilh racing in Otago since its earliest days as an administrator and an owner and breeder of horses. The best of the horses he raced were Marianne, Wingatui, Ruena, and Meitui. He also bred Lancewing and Moneybird. When 17J years of age, Mr Green acted as clerk of the scales for the North Taieri Jockey Club, and later, when the
club shifted its headquarters to Mosgiel Park and became known as the Taieri Club, he maintained his interest, and eventually filled the presidential chair for 12 years. He was also a foundation member and president of the Otago Owners and Trainers’ Association. Mr Green was a member of the Green Island Band and a foundation member of the Protestant Alliance Lodge at Green Island. Mr Green, in addition to being a successful exhibitor at horticultural shows, was intensely interested in New Zealand plant life. He had one of the finest private collections of minerals and birds’ eggs in New Zealand. Born in Surrey in 1866. Mr Green arrived in New Zealand in 1867, and since then lived at Abbotsford. Coal was discovered on the property ort which the family settled, and he followed mining as a career, eventually becoming managing director of the company formed to work the property. Mr Green married Miss Ann Thompson, of Mosgiel, who predeceased him by eight years. There are four sons and two daughters.
