BITTER CRITICISM

MARSHALL PLAN CUTS “THREAT TO AMERICAN SECURITY ” N.Z.P.A. —Copyright Rec. 11 p.m. NEW YORK, June 9. The Republican Herald Tribune, on its front page, to-day prints a leading article headed: " Saving the Republican Party.” The article states: “ The action of <the House in cutting the total of the European Recovery Programme appropriation compromised the pledged word of the United States, undermined the structure of the Marshall Plan and thereby threatened the safety of the United States in the years that lie ahead. “ Coming in the Presidential year,' with the Republican convention only a few days away, the vote threatens an even greater danger to the Republican Party. The action last week in the House, we regret to say, went far to destroy the achievement of establishing a distinguished record in dealing with foreign affairs. By an unrecorded vole, through the ingenious manoeuvring of Republican leadership, the Lower Chamber went on record as ready to walk out on its earlier resolve and to abandon the European Recovery Programme. “ The power displayed by the leadership was ominous, for in the future the same leadership, could nominate a weakling and an isolationist. Such a result could not but be fatal to the Republican Party whether the candidate won or lost in November.”
