WAITAHUNA FLOODING

HIGHWAYS BOARD'S REPORT MOTORSTS NOT SATISFIED The Automobile Association (Otago) at its monthly meeting last night decided to express dissatisfaction with the report of the chairman of the Highways Board, Mr F. Langbein, to the South Island Motor Union, following the association’s representations on flooding at Waitahuna. Several speakers pointed out that other work, which did not seem to be as important, was being carried out. Mr Langbein’s report on the subject stated that the trouble was due to mining operations. Little could be done except fairly extensive river control work with consequent heavy maintenance. A copy was also received of Mr Langbexn's report to the Motor Union concerning the Haast Pass highway. It stated that the section that* had been completed to a point about nine miles on the western side of the divide and now reported to be deteriorating, had not yet been declared a main highway.—Received. The City Council advised that the question of the abolition of white covers on conductors’ caps, raised by the association, “had been considered by the Transport Committee.”—“ Not very informative,” remarked one member, as the letter was received. A letter was received from Mr M. H. Wynyard, the association’s representative on the Highways Board, concerning the postponement of the work on the approaches to the Shag River bridge at Bushey. stating that the board would probably get a report on the matter.—Received. The Department of Internal Affairs advised that it was investigating the question raised in a letter from the association of the removal of the monument at Gorge Creek from its present site to a position close to the new highway.—Received. There were present Messrs G. T. Anderson (in the chair), H. S. Reid, D. Forsyth, J. L. Passmore, G. G. Adess, p, w. Breen, G. Caldwell, W. L. Coxhead, R. A. Douglas, W. J. Mclnnes. N. R. Mclsaac, L. McMillan, B. M. Rodger, A. L. Scobie, T. K. S. Sidey, R. o. Talbot, G. T. Thorn and T. Y. Turner
