Berkett. Improved Pacer The Red Shadow mare Gough’s Pride is one of the most improved performers of the season, and looks certain to take high honours She has won five racesand collected as many minor placings. A Good Record Sirocco, a half-brother to Emulous and Lightning Lady, has built up a good record this season, having won three times and been placed in six of his last 12 starts. . ‘ By Quite Sure Belshazzar and Decisive, who finished first and second'in the Longbeach Handicap at Ashburton on Monday, are both trained by C. R. Berkett. Belshazzar is by Quite Sure from Mishap, and Decisive is by the same sire from Belle Moko. Bright Future Java went another good race at Ashburton on Monday to finish second to Jasons Quest as he gave away about GO yards through losing ground at the start. He shows promise of stepping his way into tigher classes. Driver Changed A well-known Chinese, Percy Chew Lee, was semaphored as the driver of Loyal Velvet in the Improvers’ Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, but after a discussion witn the stipendiary stewards in the birdcage, Lee, who races Loyal Velvet in partnership with Mr O. G. Davies, agreed to let A. Townley take the drive. Chinese horsemen are rare in New Zealand, but in Svdney the 21-year-old E. Doon has been riding with success for some time.
