WINTER SHOW

ALL SECTIONS POPULAR QUEUES FOR ADMISSION The Winter Show of 1948 is proving no less popular than its forerunners and old and young flocked through the doors yesterday, many of them having queued for some time before gaining admission. Those who came early were fortunate in that they had a better opportunity to study the excellent array of exhibits in comfort before the milling crowds made sightseeing difficult and loitering a hazardous procedure. All sections were popular. Motorists examined wistfully the new cars on display, children clambered on to farm machinery, parents and their off-spring scrutinised the champion birds and cats in the Fanciers’ Club Show —and were in turn scrutinised by the birds and cats. The excellent exhibits in the display of work sponsored by the Otago Education Board was a particular favourite. Children, generally, appeared to be more critical than their elders, some of whom were, no doubt,

pre-occupied by consideration of the failure of their own young hopefuls to achieve the high standards set in the display. The sideshows were kept fairly busy, although there were always more people willing to look on than to spend their own money. Skill at throwing darts or wooden balls provided a spur to the ego of those who succeeded in winning prizes, but also provided the winners with the problem of what would be the most useful thing to do with the objets d’art so gained. The merry-go-round was as popular as ever with children, some parents yielding to the clamour for “ one more ride ” with the philosophical thought that at least they knew where the children were while they were enjoying the thrill.
