EMPEROR HIROHITO
ABDICATION PLANNED UNCONFIRMED RUMOURS IN TOKIO N.Z.P.A.—Reuter— Copyright Rec. 1 a.m. TOKIO, May 27. Tokio buzzed to-day with unconfirmed rumours that Emperor Hirohito was planning to abdicate on August 15. Rumours, which began on March 6 after the Emperor’s visit to General MacArthur, have become stronger in the past few days. His abdication, it is said, would be timed to coincide with the execution of Tojo and other war leaders. The Crown Prince Akihito, aged 14, would succeed Hirohito in the event of his abdication. Japanese sources say the rumours have probably been given greater credence because of recent criticism of the Emperor by the vice-president
