Australia May Recognise Israel

Rec. 10 p.m. CANBERRA, May 26. Australia is expected to follow South Africa in giving provisional recognition to the State of Israel in Palestine. It was stated to-day that the Commonwealth is in close consultation with Britain and other dominions. Provisional recognition would meet mechanical difficulties caused by the present situation in Palestine rather than involving any permanent commitment. Important factors involved are protection for Australian nationals in Palestine, the issue of passports, and the maintenance or commercial relations between Australia and Palestine.
