CAMPAIGNING ENDS
SOUTH AFRICAN 'ELECTIONS TO-DAY JOHANNESBURG, May 25. While Government controls and Communism have been the main issues in the campaign preceding the House of Assembly elections, which will be held to-morrow, South Africa’s recognition of Israel has provided a preelection sensation. As a result, the Jews are likely to vote solidly for General Smuts, but his non-Jewish followers received the news with mixed feelings. Polling wilt be for 140 seats. General Smuts leads the United Party, which has 89 seats, Dr D. F. Malan heads the Nationalists, who have 43 seats The other two major parties are the Afrikaaner Party and the United Labour Party. The latest incident in a strenuous campaign occurred last night, when 100 students.! shouting: “Three cheers for Hitler,’’ tried to break up a meeting which the Deputy Premier, Mr J. H. Hofmeyr, was addressing.
